Job Responsibilities

This position performs all duties of a Certified Laboratory Assistant in a moderate complex test environment. Communicates with Physicians/Nursing Staff, as appropriate about patients, specimen collection, computer issues and other laboratory issues. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in patient condition or response to phlebotomy/specimen collection.

Job Duties

-Performs laboratory specimen processing consisting of receiving, identifying, assigning accession numbers, sorting, preparation and internal laboratory distribution of blood, urine, and other biological specimens.

-Ensures proper patient and staff safety standards are met through compliance with laboratory safety standards.

-Operate laboratory equipment in accordance with local, state and federal standards.

-Operate laboratory equipment per operations of a moderate complex laboratory.

-Responsible for ensuring laboratory specimens are drawn and analyzed according to established standards of care.

-Performs all duties using universal precautions and appropriate protective equipment as required to reduce exposure to infection, blood borne pathogens and hazardous materials.

-Ensure proper packaging and shipment of lab specimens being sent out to outside laboratories.

-Order laboratory supplies as appropriate and within budgeted limits.

Skills

-Current clinical laboratory concepts, techniques and practices used in moderately complex testing.

-Training on laboratory equipment used in moderately complex testing

-Current training in quality control, quality assurance concepts, and proficiency standards and practices

-Current training techniques and customer service skills

-Phlebotomy techniques, specimen handling and specimen integrity issues

-Laboratory and medical terminology.

Qualifications/Requirements

-High school diploma or GED

-Phlebotomy certification from an accredited agency, completion of an approved phlebotomy training course, or equivalent experience through previous employment

-Previous experience in phlebotomy or healthcare.
